Fall Outdoor Decorating Ideas for the Grandmillennial

Looking to update your outdoor space for fall? In this post, you’ll find all of the best grandmillennial fall decor and ways to decorate your front door and porch for fall. Let’s get into the best fall porch decor ideas!

Decorating your porch for fall can be so much fun! But, if we’re being honest, a lot of modern fall decor tends to lean a bit cheesy. You know the type. Bright orange pumpkin displays, scarecrows, and traditional fall colors that don’t always feel very mature. It’s a hard pass from me!

Thankfully, you can find very beautiful fall outdoor decor now from various retailers to help you ring in the new season without sacrificing your style.

This fall front porch inspiration is all about keeping it classy and timeless, with subtle autumn touches that blend with your home’s existing grandmillennial style. Think of it as a decorating style for fall without screaming “fall” from the rooftops!

What Month Should I Start Decorating for Fall?

Hey, to each their own! You should decorate for fall when it feels natural to you. Some start mid to late August and others wait for the first part of September to roll in. Now that it’s about mid-September as I’m writing this post, I think it’s the ideal and perfect time to start decorating.

How To Decorate The Outside Of Your House For Fall

Decorating the exterior part of your house for fall can be easier than you think. Since we have both Halloween and Thanksgiving in this season, I like to mix in a little of both. Let’s walk through some easy styling tips to help you achieve the fall front porch of your dreams!

1. Hay Bale Displays

Don’t over look hay bales! Most garden centers have them for sale and they are inexpensive. Most of the time you see them in fall front porches stacked up with orange pumpkins. What if you tried placing a chinoiserie flower vase on top instead?

How charming is this blue & white floral porcelain ceramic decorative flower pot set? You could use these on a hay bale or pick one larger one to make a statement.

Hay bales also remind me of the rattan material we see in a lot of coastal home finds.. maybe it’s the color? Anyways, they also are a fall emblem so if you’re trying to achieve a grandmillennial fall front porch or outdoor space, it’s a no brainer!

2. Garden Flags

Let’s chat about fall garden flags! Swapping out your garden flag is a fantastic way to spruce up your outdoor area for fall. Whether it’s displayed near the front porch or in the backyard, it can bring color and life to your space.

Linking two options below that I think would look gorgeous in your yard and become a fall favorite!

Subtle pumpkins, leaves, and a small “Welcome” message make this flag everything I could want!

I’m a huge fan of the multitude of adorable fall garden flags on Etsy, but Amazon has some nice picks as well! They are definitely more affordable on Amazon. But, for a personalized option you can pull out year after year, Etsy is the way to go.

If you don’t have a small garden flag stand, I highly suggest this white one. It just brightens things up as opposed to the typically harsh black ones.

3. Fall Welcome Mats

Swap out those old generic welcome mats for a new fall inspired find! The key here is to avoid the bright orange and green welcome mats you see this time of year. I like keeping things very classy and neutral. This “gather” mat is perfect!

These provide a warm welcome and visual interest. It’s one of my favorite outdoor decorating ideas!

If you live near an At Home store, be sure and choose in-store pick up to save. Even if not, I still think it’s worth the buy. You’ll pull this out year after year!

Are you an avid Target shopper? If so, this Target welcome mat is for you! With just a touch of green, it’s a classic choice.

To store after the season ends, roll up and house in the garage or a closet. By rolling it up, you prevent creases and optimize storage space.

4. White Pumpkins

Pile some white pumpkins up on your front porch for an instant fall lift! Don’t forget that the local pumpkin patch probably has some white, light green, or even blue pumpkins available. After all, is there anything more fall inspired than pumpkins?

If you’re not up for real pumpkins, no worries. I’ve used faux options before and it always works out great. They’re an easy way to add the fall theme! Here’s a couple of options from Amazon that will works wonders on your front porch. Plus, you can use them for years.

These ceramic pumpkins come as a set of two from Amazon and are so sleek. Bring them indoors for a fall centerpiece, or keep them outside. They work for any occasion!

Want a few different colors? Add a splash of color with a large green faux pumpkin! This one pairs well with white pumpkins or can stand alone.

Either of these faux pumpkins would look stunning on your front porch for fall! Simple ways of decorating are often the best for getting that welcoming look! Outdoor fall decorations wouldn’t be complete without pumpkins.

5. Fall Wreath Sash

Have you ever thought to add a sash to your existing gorgeous wreath? Instead of buying a brand new wreath for each season, just swap out the sashes! Plus, the storage on these is super easy since they are so small.

I recommend sourcing Etsy for these. They have the best options!

See how these instantly transform an ordinary wreath into something special? Wreath sashes are always great ideas!

If you’re up for some orange, I just love the background print on this wreath sash! The color scheme matches my home perfectly.

6. Cozy Lanterns

If you don’t already have a few lanterns on your porch or outdoor spaces, now is the time to add some! When you think of fall, you think of cozy and warm vibes. Lanterns provide just that! I also love string lights for creating a cozy ambiance.

cozy white lanterns

I sourced Amazon of course for a few lantern options for you and found some great ones for that classic fall decor feel!

navy blue lantern

Featuring a built in flickering candle, you can’t go wrong with this navy blue lantern!

I’d use these paired with any of the other elements mentioned above. Beside some pumpkins, a fall welcome mat, or next to a hay bale would look perfect. Just be careful if you’re using real flames!

If classic white is more your style, this is a very economical pack. I actually can’t believe you get both of these for the price!

Have fun sourcing vintage lanterns at estate sales or thrift stores. Lanterns are a timeless piece that always look great on a front porch.

7. Plant Arrangements

Finally, don’t forget that leaves and flowers are the epitome of fall! While orange, brown, and yellow stems are popular, don’t forget that you can also lean into other hues as well.

This one is a great choice if you’re a fan of the more classic fall foliage colors toned down a smidge.

White mums, purple mums, seasonal flowers, or simple green stems are all perfect fall decor ideas.

Sometimes a simple green and white potted plant is all it takes!

If you already have plants, add pumpkins or leaves at the base for added interest! Have any other fall porch ideas? I’d love to hear your favorite fall decor!

Conclusion

Can you believe it’s already September? This year has just flown by. Pretty soon we’ll be decorating for Christmas! But, I do like to pause and take September, October, and November to celebrate the fall season and all that it brings.

If you’ve found yourself itching to bring in the season in your outdoor spaces, these decorating tips and front porch ideas are for you! From neutral colors to seasonal accents, these creative ideas are the best for the autumn season.
